Visas for British Citizens
Two programs are available. One program is available for students and the other is open to any British citizen under the age of 35.
Working Holiday Program (Student)
This program will give you an open work permit that will enable you to work anywhere in Canada, in almost any field. Tour around the West Coast for a while and take in the sights of Whistler and the Rocky Mountains, then travel to the East and see Niagara Falls and the beautiful Maritimes. With the Working Holiday Program you make your own itinerary and go wherever you want while being able to fund your journeys with temporary jobs. The duration is up to 12 months.
The main requirements are:
- British citizenship
- Resident in the UK at the time of application
- Aged 18-35
- Currently enrolled, or a recent graduate of a post-secondary program
- Have sufficient funds for your first month in Canada (about £1000)
- Have a job offer from a Canadian company
The point in bold is important. Before you can apply for your working holiday visa, you will need to get a letter from a Canadian company saying that they will employ you once you arrive in Canada. This may take up to 4 weeks to arrange, so you should make sure that you have enough time to get the job offer. Our parent company, WISH Vancouver offers a job placement service for Working Holidaymakers that might interest you. We also encourage you to use on-line tooles like Craigslist for your job search. You can download the application form for this visa here.
Working Holiday Program (Non-Student)
This program is almost identical to the student Working Holiday Program. You get a 1-year work permit, you can work anywhere in Canada etc..., but there are two important differences. The first is that you do not need a job offer like you do with the Student Working Holiday permit, and the second is that you do need to go through a travel agency and pay about £200 before you can apply for the permit.
Here are the requirements:
- British citizenship
- Resident in the UK at the time of application
- Aged 18-35
- Have sufficient funds for your first month in Canada (about £1000)
To apply for this visa, please visit the BUNAC website. Numbers are very limited and this visa usually runs out before the end of February.
