What to ExpectWill I Get PaidEveryone would love to have a paid internship position. Some areas of internship are more likely to have a paid spot than the others and if you did some research on the internet, Canadian companies hardly post internship positions. It is mostly a job posting rather than internship or co-op postings. Public universities carry a large database of companies that hire their co-op students but private schools do not.Anything less than 3 months, we suggest that you should not expect to get paid. We have done a lot of staff training in our office and others. It takes at least 2 to 3 months to fully train someone to be functional and this is the average time period companies spend for training new staff also. If you are taking about 6 months to 1 year away from home taking an internship, you can write in your cover letter that you are willing to spend the first 3 months unpaid trainee but financial remuneration after 3 months based on evaluation would be appreciated. You need a proper work permit to work and get paid. All companies take tax off (CPP and EI) your pay. Canadian companies pay every 2 weeks or twice a month. If you are not paying tax off your pay, you are a contractor (Freelancer). Since you are staying only for a year or less, your tax record is not really relevant to you. But if you have interest in moving to Canada as a permanent immigrant, you should ensure that tax is deducted off your pay and make sure you keep the record for future immigration purpose. For further inquiries, you can take a look at Revenue Canada website or HR Block. Tip: Canadian Universities have Co-op programs. And University co-op department book co-op positions for their students with employers. If the company you are talking to have taken co-op student, it might have been paid position. Keep in mind that Canadian Government provide salary subsidiary for employers if they qualify to receive the funds. |
