You Might Find Yourself in These Situations

I just started work and I am not doing what I expected
The first week or two is always a challenge. The employer is getting used to you and you are getting used to them. Whether it is an internship or work, it takes time for people to know each other's ability and limitations. Do not expect to do what you want in the first week or two - you must first be trained about the organization and the position you are in. The long process of training is part of the reason why we recommend the internship period to be approximately 3 months.

No one is talking to me and I don't feel comfortable
Your co-workers are likely to have worked together for months or even years. You are new to their environment, and your first language is probably not English. Take the initiative to start a conversation. Invite them to lunch. You will be surprised at how receptive most people are to this. Speak your mind!

I never see my supervisor and I have nothing to do
Your supervisor has a job too. More than likely he or she is a manager or in a responsible position that needs their attention. Talk to other co-workers to see how you can assist them or take the initiative to do work that you think the company might need or write down things you have learnt that you will find useful in the future. Canadian companies will take notice of people who takes initiative and this will show what you are capable of! If you feel that there is a problem with your workplace that is more than just your supervisor is busy, please do inform us. We can help you.

My work is too long or too short
The normal working week in Canada is 40 hours per week, 8 hours per day with an extra one hour for lunch. Sometimes work hours may be slightly more or less depending upon the company. If you are working more or less than this, please contact your internship manager. The only instance where part time or substantial overtime is permitted is when it is agreed upon by: you, the company, and your educational institution.

I can't speak on the phone with clients, it is just too difficult
Yes it is difficult. Particularly when you are speaking with Canadians that have several different accents and you are used to seeing peoples faces and body languages. Because it is so tough, you will be amazed at how quickly you will learn to be comfortable on the phone, and how quickly your language comprehension will improve. Have patience.

Why does it take so long for people here to make decisions?
Remember where you are: Canada is a big country. Most companies have head offices in the US or in the east of Canada and they are at least 3 hours ahead of us. By the time you go to work in the morning, most of the day's decisions are already made. Also, each decision requires change in the system. Due to the distance and the Canadian culture, people may take longer to make decisions.

I am not comfortable at my workplace
Often, if your internship work place is not comfortable it is due to personal reason rather than work it self. It is sometimes difficult to get along with the office staff, your direct supervisor or someone at the work place that hurt your feelings. Talk to the person who interviewed you and made the decision to accept you as an intern. He or She cared about you enough to take you in.

If you find yourself in a situation where you feel un-safe, please contact local authority or you can send us an email. info@canadianinternship.com and we will send you our reply promply.
